Breaking the Holiday Survival Mode: Small Shifts to Reclaim Your Energy

Hey everyone! Life Coach Carisa here. The holidays are a magical time of year, but let’s be honest—they can also feel overwhelming. If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in what feels like “survival mode,” just trying to make it through without losing your mind, you’re not alone. I want to explore what survival mode looks like, how it affects us during the holidays, and, most importantly, how to break free from it to reclaim your joy.

What Is Holiday Survival Mode?

Survival mode is like running on autopilot, racing to check every box on an endless to-do list. While it can feel productive, it often leaves us anxious, irritable, and disconnected from the simple joys of the season. For many of us, the pressure to create a picture-perfect holiday amplifies these feelings.

Personally, I didn’t even realize I was stuck in survival mode for years. I was too focused on “handling things” to notice how much I was missing out on truly meaningful moments. Let me share a couple of examples.

A Personal Story: Missing the Magic

One year, my kids wanted to decorate the yard with oversized, inflatable holiday decorations—think glowing, blinking snowmen that seemed to have swallowed a string of LEDs. At the time, I was so attached to the idea of how I wanted our house to look that I dismissed their enthusiasm. Instead of embracing the fun and silliness, I got stuck in perfectionism. Looking back, I realize I prioritized my vision over their joy.

Another year, after weeks of decorating, planning, and cooking, I found myself restless on Christmas Day. Instead of relaxing and enjoying time with my family, I was glued to my phone or sneaking in work on my laptop. My mind simply couldn’t slow down enough to be present.

It took me a while to realize that much of this behavior stemmed from unhealthy programming I’d absorbed in childhood. I’d never learned what a healthy, joyful holiday looked like, so I ended up sabotaging the very moments I worked so hard to create.

Signs You Might Be in Survival Mode

If any of this sounds familiar, here are some common indicators of being stuck in survival mode:

If you’re nodding along, here’s the good news: you don’t have to stay stuck.

Small Shifts to Reclaim Your Energy

Breaking out of survival mode doesn’t require an overhaul. Small, intentional changes can make a big difference. Here are a few steps to help you reclaim your energy and joy this holiday season:

  1. Set Boundaries and Say No Gracefully
You don’t have to attend every event or meet every expectation. A simple “I’d love to, but I can’t this time” can go a long way.
  2. Prioritize Self-Care
Self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate. Whether it’s a five-minute walk, deep breathing before bed, or journaling, find small moments to recharge.
  3. Let Go of Perfection
Remember, no one’s holiday is perfect. Focus on what feels meaningful instead of striving for impossible standards.
  4. Be Present
Put your phone away and soak up the moments that matter. Watch your kids tear into gifts, listen to family stories, and savor the memories being made.

Moving Forward with Intention

The holidays are a chance to slow down, reflect, and approach life with greater intentionality. If you find yourself slipping into survival mode, remind yourself: you are not broken. You’re simply human. With awareness and small shifts, you can create a season filled with joy and connection.
