Rewire Your Mindset and Escape Survival Mode

Hey everyone! Life Coach Carisa here. Welcome to the New Year! January always feels like a fresh start, doesn’t it? While I’m not the biggest fan of traditional resolutions, I do believe in the power of new beginnings. Our brains are wired to respond to the promise of a fresh start, and we can use that to step into the best version of ourselves.

But let’s be honest. In those quiet moments, when it’s just you and your thoughts, do you feel like you’re thriving? Or are you simply surviving—managing the chaos, juggling the demands, and pushing through the day?

Survival mode serves its purpose during tough times, but staying there too long robs us of the joy, peace, and fulfillment we’re meant to experience.

For me, writing my first book this past year was a transformative journey. As I reflected on my struggles and patterns, I uncovered a key realization: many of the behaviors that kept me stuck stemmed from inherited programming—beliefs and habits passed down through childhood development. These unconscious patterns shaped how I viewed myself, my relationships, and the world. Recognizing this allowed me to break free, and it’s why I’m passionate about helping others do the same.

Why We Get Stuck in Survival Mode

Much of our survival mindset comes from inherited programming. This is the collection of beliefs, behaviors, and emotional patterns we absorb during our upbringing. Over time, these patterns become our default operating system, often keeping us on autopilot.

The problem? When we live unconsciously, we settle for what’s familiar instead of intentionally creating the life we truly want.

Recognize the Friction

Breaking free from survival mode starts with awareness. Ask yourself:

These friction points—those areas of discomfort—are signals pointing to where change is needed. Take time to reflect on them. Journaling can be a powerful tool to uncover these patterns and identify what’s holding you back.

The 4 R’s Framework for Rewiring Your Mindset

To shift from survival to thriving, I use a process I call The 4 R’s Framework. It’s simple yet effective:

  1. Recognize
    • Identify the thoughts, beliefs, and habits that are no longer serving you.
    • Ask yourself: What’s holding me back? What’s detrimental to my well-being?
  2. Reframe
    • Shift your perspective to align with your authentic self.
    • Focus on progress and potential rather than limitations.
    • Adopt empowering beliefs to replace those that keep you stuck.
  3. Retrain
    • Repeated practice creates new neural pathways in your brain.
    • Every time you act on a new belief, you strengthen it.
    • Remember: consistency, not perfection, creates lasting change.
  4. Repeat
    • Mastery comes with repetition. Keep showing up, even on hard days. Over time, these new habits will become second nature.

What’s Possible When You Rewire Your Mindset?

Imagine waking up feeling calm, confident, and at peace, no matter what challenges come your way. When you rewire your mindset, this becomes possible. Here are some of the “rainbow results” you can expect:

I’ve lived this transformation. For years, my mindset was stuck in patterns of negativity. I focused on what I lacked rather than what I had. I was critical of myself and, in turn, critical of others.

But when I began rewiring my mindset, everything changed. I discovered a sense of peace, improved my relationships, and learned to truly love myself. That self-love allowed me to love others fully and unconditionally.

You Are Not Broken

Here’s the truth: you’re not broken. You’re wired for survival, but you were born to thrive.
