Hey everyone! Life Coach Carisa here. Are you tired of setting goals year after year, only to feel burned out and unmotivated? If so, you’re not alone. Many people start the new year with big aspirations but struggle to maintain their momentum. The problem? Most traditional goal-setting methods come from a place of negativity and self-criticism rather than inspiration and alignment.
It’s time for a fresh approach—one that helps you set meaningful, sustainable goals without the pressure and burnout. Let’s dive into a powerful, intentional way to create goals that truly serve you in 2025.
Are You Bringing the Right Energy to Your Goals?
One of the biggest mistakes I used to make when setting goals was approaching them from a place of dissatisfaction. I wasn’t happy with my health, routine, or work-life balance, so I’d create goals like, “I need to fix this.” But here’s the problem: goals set from a place of lack rarely lead to lasting success.
Instead, think about the energy you bring to your goals. When you’re feeling excited, inspired, and engaged, you naturally perform better and stay committed longer. So rather than setting goals out of frustration, try setting them from a place of love and possibility.
From Surviving to Thriving: A New Goal-Setting Mindset
A few years ago, I noticed a pattern: I would set ambitious goals only to feel drained and overwhelmed. So, I decided to try something new. Instead of focusing solely on achievements, I made a list of 25 things I wanted to create in my life—a mix of personal growth, joyful experiences, and meaningful changes. Here are a few examples:
- Eat more vegetables
- Drink more water
- Spend quality time with my husband
- Write a book
- Walk 500 miles in a year
- Smile and laugh more
- Replace defensiveness with love
- Grow my life coaching business
These goals weren’t about fixing something “wrong” with me. They were about building a life I loved.
Aligning Your Goals with Your “Why”
IOnce I had my list, I went deeper by asking: Why does this matter to me? How will it enhance my life?
For example:
- Drink more water → To feel energized and clear-headed throughout the day.
- Spend quality time with my husband → Because our relationship is a foundation of my joy and peace.
Attaching a meaningful “why” to each goal transformed the way I pursued them. I wasn’t just checking off tasks—I was creating a purposeful, fulfilling life.
From Brainstorming to Action: Making Goals Achievable
Of course, you can’t tackle 25 goals at once. So, I started with the “low-hanging fruit”—the goals that felt easiest or most exciting to pursue right away. Then, I brainstormed specific actions for each one.
For example:
- Drinking more water → Keeping a full water bottle with me at all times.
- Spending more time with my husband → Scheduling regular outings, like bike rides or date nights.
By breaking big goals into small, actionable steps, I made them feel achievable. And as I started seeing progress, my momentum grew.
Tools to Stay Focused and Motivated
To keep myself on track, I leaned on a few powerful tools:
- Books: Atomic Habits by James Clear and Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg provided practical strategies for building lasting habits.
- Future & Past Self-Letters: Writing letters to my future self helped me stay connected to my long-term vision, while letters to my past self reminded me of how far I’d come.
- Vision Boards: A visual reminder of what I was working toward. The first year I did this, I achieved about 90% of what was on my board!
- Daily Affirmations: Using positive self-talk and sticky notes around my house kept my focus on what mattered most.
How to Avoid Burnout While Pursuing Your Goals
One of the biggest challenges with goal setting is burnout. It happens when we push too hard without honoring our energy or needs. That’s why flexibility is key.
If you’re overwhelmed, scale back rather than give up. Even taking one small step forward is progress. For example, when my dad passed away, I had to travel six times in six months. I couldn’t maintain my full routine, but I adjusted my goals to fit what was realistic for me at that time. The key is to practice self-compassion while staying committed to what truly matters.
