Spring has a way of inspiring new growth. It’s the season for clearing out the old to make room for the new. That is why I believe there is no better time than right now to talk about an area where so many of us feel stuck in a perpetual winter: Our Money Mindset.
We are living in a world that feels like a giant pressure cooker. Between the rising cost of groceries, rent, and simply existing, most of us are stuck in a state of constant financial hyper-vigilance.
But here is a truth most people won’t tell you: You cannot budget your way out of a survival response.
Even if you had a million dollars in the bank tomorrow, if your internal wiring is set to “scarcity,” you still wouldn’t feel safe. To find true stability, we have to look at our Inherited Scarcity.
The “Safe Number” Trap
I’ve been through this. Years ago, my financial anxiety was suffocating. I lived in a downward spiral of panic, convinced that if I just hit a certain “number” in my bank account, I’d finally be able to breathe.
But I remember the moment I surpassed that number… and the panic didn’t stop.
That was my awakening. I realized that safety isn’t a figure on a screen; it’s a feeling in the body. If your “Not Enough” wound is open, no amount of money will ever be a big enough bandage.
The Story of the Red Ink
I grew up in a family business, and from the age of seven, I was a student of scarcity. I still remember my first bank passbook. I would walk to the bank to deposit a single dollar, but I also had a specific habit: Every time I withdrew money, I wrote the reason in red ink.
To my seven-year-old brain, red meant “Danger.” It meant I was doing something wrong by needing things. I entered adulthood with a nervous system wired to believe that money was something to be feared, defended, and hoarded.
I carried that “Red Ink” story into my marriage and my business, and it created a suffering that no paycheck could fix.
Uncover Your Money Roots
Your money story often starts at the dinner table. To help you uncover yours, I want you to grab a journal and honestly ask yourself these five questions:
- The Atmospheric Check: When money was discussed in your house growing up, what was the “temperature” of the room? Was it cold and silent, or hot and explosive?
- The Secret Keeper: Was money used as a tool for control or a secret between parents? Did you learn that money equals power or money equals fear?
- The “Unexpected Expense” Test: When a surprise bill hits, what is the first thing you feel in your body? Is it a “pivot to a solution” or a “spiral into survival”?
- The “Looking at the App” Habit: Do you avoid your bank account because the “fog” feels safer than the facts, or do you check it obsessively to soothe your anxiety?
- The Safety Moving Target: If you doubled your income tomorrow, would you actually feel twice as safe? Or would your “Safe Number” just move further away?
A Somatic Shift for Today
We have to stop lying to our nervous systems. We tell ourselves we’re “stressed about money and the economy,” but the truth is, many of us are actually terrified of being okay. Why? Because if you aren’t the “hustler” or the “worrier,” you don’t know who you are anymore.
You can retrain your brain. Start by identifying your “Lack Filter.” If you feel “not enough” in your bank account, check if you also feel “not enough” in your time, your relationships, or your self-worth. It’s all the same wound.
Anchor your nervous system. The next time a bill hits, don’t spiral. Breathe. Use an anchor statement: “I am capable of creating the value to cover this. I have my own back.”
You were not born to be a professional bill-payer. You were not born to be a survival expert. You are allowed to be safe right now, exactly as you are, before a single digit in your bank account changes.
